[Music]

03:08 - 03:11

oh

03:32 - 03:36

[Music]

03:33 - 03:36

all

04:29 - 04:31

what

04:41 - 04:45

[Music]

04:43 - 04:47

I hate when it does as I cut away the

04:45 - 04:49

sides every so often the snow will

04:47 - 04:53

settle and just go it's a nice little

04:49 - 04:53

noise and scares the bebies out of me

05:58 - 06:02

oh for

08:05 - 08:08

this is a pretty cozy little

08:18 - 08:23

shelter I'll tell you what that is a

08:20 - 08:23

beautiful

08:28 - 08:33

view oh

08:30 - 08:35

I've got room to sit down cook sleep

08:33 - 08:36

this is perfect and it only took me 4

08:35 - 08:38

hours to make this thing which is a lot

08:36 - 08:41

less time than some of my other snow

08:38 - 08:41

shelters

09:09 - 09:13

oh this smells so good

09:42 - 09:45

a beautiful chicken mango

09:57 - 10:02

Curry oh that was good

10:19 - 10:22

[Music]

11:08 - 11:12

check for leaks and put the hot water

11:10 - 11:14

bottle in my sleeping bag get all nice

11:12 - 11:16

and toasty I'll tell you what this is

11:14 - 11:18

just one of the best snow shelters I've

11:16 - 11:20

ever made there's a couple key features

11:18 - 11:22

that are really important to keeping you

11:20 - 11:24

warm first off you don't want your

11:22 - 11:26

sleeping area to be the lowest point in

11:24 - 11:28

the shelter the cold air tends to

11:26 - 11:29

collect the bottom another thing is you

11:28 - 11:32

want to make sure your snow sow shelter

11:29 - 11:34

has lots of Corners you don't want to

11:32 - 11:36

allow the wind to blow straight into

11:34 - 11:39

your snow shelter additionally when you

11:36 - 11:42

do have a corner make a little extra

11:39 - 11:44

room so when the wind comes down it goes

11:42 - 11:46

past the door instead of being funneled

11:44 - 11:49

into the

11:46 - 11:51

door likewise on this end I've got two

11:49 - 11:53

entrances so that if the Wind Blows

11:51 - 11:56

crosswise the wind continues through the

11:53 - 11:57

shelter instead of getting funnel down

11:56 - 11:58

into the shelter but I'm going to get a

11:57 - 12:00

chance to really test this shelter out

11:58 - 12:03

it's supposed to be a pretty good

12:00 - 12:05

snowstorm tonight we'll see what

12:03 - 12:09

happens looks like I had some s on my

12:05 - 12:11

face the snow here is really soft

12:09 - 12:14

hopefully it'll freeze really good

12:11 - 12:15

tonight then my stairs won't fall apart

12:14 - 12:17

the type and quality of the snow really

12:15 - 12:19

affects how much energy it takes to

12:17 - 12:21

build one of these shelters this was

12:19 - 12:24

really easy stuff to work with so things

12:21 - 12:27

went really fast I moved a lot of snow

12:24 - 12:29

in Just 4 hours the inside of this

12:27 - 12:31

shelter is about 5 ft wide and and the

12:29 - 12:33

roof is a little bit over 6 ft tall so

12:31 - 12:37

the very back of the shelter to the

12:33 - 12:39

mouth is 11 ft I had to move about 23

12:37 - 12:41

cubic feet of snow to excavate this part

12:39 - 12:43

of the shelter so at the bottom of the

12:41 - 12:45

entrance to the top of the snow burm

12:43 - 12:48

it's a little over 10 ft deep but the

12:45 - 12:50

original surface of the snow was about 8

12:48 - 12:52

8 and 1/2 ft deep the distance from here

12:50 - 12:55

at the top of the stairs to the back of

12:52 - 12:57

that wall is about 17 ft plus there's

12:55 - 12:59

this little bit I excavated right here

12:57 - 13:02

so my rough estimate is that I had to

12:59 - 13:05

move about 423 cubic feet of snow to

13:02 - 13:08

build this shelter a little over 15 1/2

13:05 - 13:11

cubic yards that's the max capacity of a

13:08 - 13:13

commercial dump truck I earned my hot

13:11 - 13:13

chocolate

13:17 - 13:21

tonight well it is getting late and it's

13:19 - 13:25

getting cold got some peanuts for a

13:21 - 13:25

bedtime snack

13:30 - 13:33

well it's getting late so I'm going to

13:31 - 13:35

go ahead and eat some peanuts and listen

13:33 - 13:36

to an audiobook and go to bed but

13:35 - 13:38

tomorrow I'm going to do something

13:36 - 13:41

interesting I'm going to see what it

13:38 - 13:43

takes to make this tunnel collapse I

13:41 - 13:44

know a lot of people wondered whether or

13:43 - 13:47

not these snow caves will fall down on

13:44 - 13:48

you and honestly I don't know we'll test

13:47 - 13:50

that out

13:48 - 13:53

tomorrow oh good

13:50 - 13:57

morning oh I'm nice and warm I got to

13:53 - 13:57

get up and make some breakfast

13:59 - 14:05

oh oh look at this got a lot of snow

14:03 - 14:07

last

14:05 - 14:10

night oh yeah that's got to be at least

14:07 - 14:12

a foot consequently the roof is sagged a

14:10 - 14:14

little bit it's about an inch or two

14:12 - 14:17

shorter I'm having to hunch over a lot

14:14 - 14:19

more that I did last night snow caves

14:17 - 14:21

will actually do that they'll sag quite

14:19 - 14:23

a bit over time if you're going to use

14:21 - 14:24

them for more than one day often you

14:23 - 14:26

have to redig out the roof if you're a

14:24 - 14:28

bit claustrophobic it can make it hard

14:26 - 14:31

to sleep at night knowing that the roof

14:28 - 14:33

is slow sagging over your

14:31 - 14:37

face all right let's see if I get my

14:33 - 14:37

pants on oh my pants are

14:44 - 14:47

[Music]

14:53 - 14:59

frozen steel cut oatmeal and sliced spam

14:56 - 14:59

for breakfast

15:01 - 15:06

[Applause]

15:11 - 15:15

all right the steel cut oatmeal is so

15:13 - 15:17

good got some butter in there brown

15:15 - 15:19

sugar raisins a little hot spam to go

15:17 - 15:19

with

15:25 - 15:29

it it's not bad at all all right well

15:28 - 15:30

I'm going to clean this place up and

15:29 - 15:34

then we're going to go explore outside

15:30 - 15:34

we got a lot of snow out

15:41 - 15:46

there all right let's go see what it's

15:43 - 15:49

like

15:46 - 15:49

[Music]

15:54 - 15:59

outside it's a proper little snowstorm

15:57 - 16:02

up here it is

15:59 - 16:03

really snowing all of this fresh snow is

16:02 - 16:05

going to make the Avalanche danger go

16:03 - 16:07

through the roof luckily we're not in

16:05 - 16:09

any Avalanche zones so we'll be okay

16:07 - 16:11

above the ceiling right here the snow's

16:09 - 16:13

pretty thick but yesterday I could see

16:11 - 16:15

light shining through in that corner of

16:13 - 16:16

the cave which means there's less than 2

16:15 - 16:18

ft of snow between the ceiling and the

16:16 - 16:20

surface of the snow you can kind of see

16:18 - 16:22

what I mean right here there's this blue

16:20 - 16:24

color that's light shining through the

16:22 - 16:26

snow right here you can see that's about

16:24 - 16:28

2 ft of snow so I'm really curious to

16:26 - 16:32

see whether this roof can stand up to

16:28 - 16:32

200 lb of me jumping up and down on

16:48 - 16:52

it I couldn't feel any

16:54 - 16:59

movement yeah I mean looks perfectly

16:56 - 17:01

fine from here well this one hasn't

16:59 - 17:03

collapsed yet but all snow caves

17:01 - 17:06

collapse eventually all right I think

17:03 - 17:06

it's time to get out of

17:08 - 17:13

here oh look how deep this snow is even

17:11 - 17:16

with my snow shoes it's going up to my

17:13 - 17:18

kneecap it's probably 2 and 1/2 ft of

17:16 - 17:20

fresh snow since yesterday I got a

17:18 - 17:25

sneaky suspicion that my car might be

17:20 - 17:25

very stuck when I find it

17:31 - 17:34

I think I got some digging to

17:51 - 17:57

do yeah we got a good solid 2 ft of snow

17:55 - 18:01

and I've got about 100 yards of unplowed

17:57 - 18:01

road to go ah it's going to be

18:09 - 18:14

[Applause]

18:11 - 18:16

tricky we've got absolutely no

18:14 - 18:20

visibility don't need visibility unless

18:16 - 18:20

we can drive somewhere

18:31 - 18:39

hey not bad I got like 75 ft with that

18:35 - 18:39

let's dig it out and try it again

18:54 - 18:57

[Applause]

18:59 - 19:03

[Applause]

19:11 - 19:16

power so I'm going to take my snowshoes

19:13 - 19:16

and beat a path to the plowed

19:18 - 19:23

Road oh that's a long way to go

19:35 - 19:38

I was giving it a bunch of throttle and

19:37 - 19:41

it just popped on me and I kind of

19:38 - 19:43

smelled this burning smell and now only

19:41 - 19:45

two of the wheels are spinning I think I

19:43 - 19:48

boogered up the all-wheel drive got a

19:45 - 19:50

gentleman in a big 4x4 pickup who might

19:48 - 19:55

be able to help get me

19:50 - 20:00

[Music]

19:55 - 20:00

out that's pretty sick

20:01 - 20:07

oh I'm about to go for a

20:03 - 20:07

ride oh we're doing

20:14 - 20:21

it all right man thank you yep thank you

20:18 - 20:23

hey you too that pickup truck was a

20:21 - 20:26

monster if it wasn't for that I would

20:23 - 20:26

have been here for a long

20:26 - 20:30

time oh it is nasty

20:35 - 20:40

oh oh the car is

20:38 - 20:43

smoking I'm so glad you're home and save

20:40 - 20:46

I was worried about you look at the car

20:43 - 20:49

it's smoking yeah the car looks cleaner

20:46 - 20:51

yeah it does doesn't it Oh Betsy not

20:49 - 20:53

Building a Snow Shelter: A Cozy Winter Retreat

In the midst of a snowy landscape, creating a snow shelter can be a life-saving skill for outdoor enthusiasts. This article follows an adventure where the protagonist builds a snow shelter, spends the night, and ventures out into the winter wonderland. From constructing the shelter to testing its durability, exploring the snowy surroundings, and dealing with the aftermath, every step is an exciting journey in the snow.

Building a Snow Shelter

The protagonist embarks on a four-hour project to build a snow shelter. With meticulous attention to detail, the shelter is crafted strategically with key features to ensure warmth and comfort. Corners are essential to block cold winds, while multiple entrances aid in airflow regulation, creating a cozy and secure space. The joy of a successful build is celebrated with a hearty meal of chicken mango curry, promising a comfortable night ahead.

A Night in the Snow Shelter

As night falls, the shelter is put to the ultimate test as a snowstorm blankets the landscape. Inside, the protagonist settles in, ensuring warmth by checking for leaks and securing a hot water bottle in the sleeping bag. The night passes in peace, with the shelter standing strong against the elements.

Morning Revelations

With morning light, the shelter reveals signs of the storm's impact. The roof sags under the weight of fresh snow, highlighting the temporary nature of these structures. A cozy breakfast of steel-cut oatmeal and sliced spam fuels the day ahead, preparing for an exploration of the winter landscape.

Venture into the Snowy World

Stepping outside, the protagonist is greeted by a winter wonderland transformed by the recent snowfall. The protagonist explores the snowy surroundings, contemplates the thickness of the snow, and tests the strength of the shelter's roof. Despite initial doubts, the snow cave proves resilient, showcasing the art of snow shelter construction.

The Journey Home

As the adventure concludes, the protagonist faces the challenge of navigating through deep snow to reach the awaiting car. Despite the obstacles, determination and resourcefulness shine through, eventually leading to a successful return with the help of a kind stranger with a powerful 4x4 pickup.

In conclusion, the snow shelter adventure is a testament to the resilience and creativity required to thrive in winter's harsh embrace. Each challenge met with ingenuity and determination, highlighting the beauty and unpredictability of nature's wintry realm. As the journey ends, the protagonist returns home, reflecting on the lessons learned and the joys of embracing the great outdoors.
